How One Tree Hill Helped Me Cope With Depression
In the annals of our personal histories, there are a few events that etch themselves into our collective consciousness. For me, one of those will be the pandemic. A period that will forever be remembered for its disruptions and challenges, the pandemic managed to blur the lines between the ordinary and the extraordinary, leaving an indelible mark on every facet of our lives.
The pandemic, that unwelcome guest, brought not only illness but also a companion of its own — induced depression, a gloomy tag-along to remind us that isolation and uncertainty can be quite the mental maelstrom.
While I was struggling with my mental health, a friend suggested a show called ‘One Tree Hill’ to me. Her exact words were: “It’s a feel-good show and you might get to learn some values from it.”
To be very honest, that was on life-changing advice for me. As not only the show taught me so many values, but it also helped me cope up with depression.
“One Tree Hill,” a popular teen drama television series, imparts several important values and life lessons throughout its episodes. Here are the aspects on which it helped me:
- Friendship and Loyalty:
The characters in “One Tree Hill” navigate various challenges, but their unwavering friendships and loyalty to each other are central to the series. The show emphasizes the importance of being there for friends through thick and thin, supporting them during difficult times, and maintaining strong bonds despite conflicts. There will be days when you wouldn’t be in favor of your friend’s life choices, or the fight will be love and friendship. The key is to give time to things for them to simplify. - Self-Identity and Self-Worth:
Many characters in the show grapple with issues related to self-identity, self-esteem, and self-worth. Over time, they learn to value themselves for who they are, embracing their strengths and weaknesses. The key is to find your own sense of identity and recognize your worth beyond external validation. - Resilience and Perseverance:
The characters face a variety of challenges, including personal tragedies, relationship struggles, and career setbacks. The show underscores the importance of resilience and perseverance in overcoming obstacles. It demonstrates that setbacks are a part of life, but with determination and the support of loved ones, individuals can find ways to move forward. - Forgiveness and Redemption:
Forgiveness is a recurring theme in “One Tree Hill.” Characters often grapple with conflicts and past mistakes, but the show highlights the power of forgiveness and redemption. It shows how forgiving others and oneself can lead to healing and personal growth. - Family Dynamics:
The complexities of family relationships are explored throughout the series. “One Tree Hill” portrays the challenges and dynamics within different types of families, from traditional to blended families. The show emphasizes the importance of communication, understanding, and unconditional love within families and relationships. - Ambition and Pursuit of Dreams:
Many characters in the show have aspirations and dreams, whether related to sports, music, writing, or other creative pursuits. Almost each one of them faces setbacks or doubters, they pursue their passions with determination. One gets inspired by their unyielding spirit to keep going. - Community and Support:
The fictional town of Tree Hill serves as a close-knit community where characters come together to support one another. The show underscores the value of having a strong support system and being there for neighbors and friends in times of need. - Social Responsibility:
The series occasionally addresses social issues such as poverty, discrimination, and bullying. It encourages characters to stand up for what is right and to use their voices and influence to create positive change. - Love and Relationships:
While romantic relationships are a significant aspect of the show, “One Tree Hill” also explores different types of love and relationships, including friendships, family bonds, and self-love. It portrays the complexities of love and encourages viewers to prioritize healthy and respectful relationships. It also teaches that instead of forcing yourself into temporary relationships or arrangements, it’s always better to “wait for love”. - Personal Growth and Transformation:
Characters in the show evolve and mature as they navigate the challenges and lessons life presents. The show illustrates that personal growth is a continuous journey filled with learning, change, and self-discovery. By far, the best character development is of Brooke Davis.
Despite the fact that each character has their own story and journey in the show, Peyton Sawyer is the one I relate to the most.
Peyton Sawyer went through the toughest journey of any other character during her six seasons on One Tree Hill. She never really had her parents around, was stuck in a love triangle between two brothers, and then another love triangle with a Scott brother and her best friend, and nearly lost her life on more than on occasion.
Through it all, Peyton never stopped striving for greatness and doing whatever it took to achieve her dreams and live her life the way her biological and adopted mothers never got to. Peyton’s greatest love story was established in the pilot episode of the series, but she had a few other sweet romances that would have been almost as satisfying as her happily ever after (with Jake) — and some that were incredibly incompatible (with Nathan).
Her love for music was awe-inspiring and I am super jealous of the fact that she had a room full of vinyl records. Her ability to express herself through creative outlets is both inspiring and a reflection of her emotional depth and complexity.
I can go on and on about her, but I will simply say that I admire her the most for her creativity, independence, resilience, loyalty, empathy, love for art, personal growth, advocacy, authenticity, and determination.
Through the experiences of its characters, the show’s valuable life lessons and finding the character with whom I could resonate beyond the fictional world of Tree Hill, I was able to pull myself out of the dark space I was in.
